On the 21st of August Yoshkar-Ola celebrated the 420thanniversary. Yoshkar-Ola, city in western Russia, capital of Mari El republic, located along the Malaya Kokshaga River about 650 km (403 mi) east of Moscow. Yoshkar-Ola's economy is based on light industry, including the production of knitwear and shoes, although some factories also produce machines. Food production in the city includes vitamins, dairy products, and meat. The city is located along a railroad spur from the Moscow-Kazan rail line. Yoshkar-Ola has a regional history museum, established in 1924, and several theaters, including a drama theater and a puppet theater. It also has many stone and wood buildings that date from the 19th century. Yoshkar-Ola was founded in 1584 by decree of the Russian tsar. It was named Tsaryovokokshaysk until 1919 and Krasnokokshaysk from 1919 until 1927. Population (1995) 348,398.
