Welcome to Yoshkar-Ola

Yoshkar-Ola was founded in 1584. Since that time the city changed names several times. Originally it was known as Tsar's city on the Kokshaga and was named Tsarevokokshaysk. In 1918 it was given a new name of Krasnokokshaysk, which meant Red City on the Kokshaga. Red was the color of the banner and that's where the name derives from. At that very time local Maris called the city Charla (red city). And only in 1928 the city got the name of Yoshkar-Ola, which still meant Red City. The town gradually developed, thought this evolving wasn't fast primarily due to the geographical location. By the 19th century the city had 15 streets, 3 squares, a garden and 5 elementary schools, 2 libraries and one hospital.

Today Yoshkar-Ola is the capital of Mari El Republic. It is the historical, cultural and scientific center of the republic, which keeps the coming tourists interested and alert. In Yoshkar-Ola there are many ways to make native citizens and city guests happy, distracted and even sometimes encourage them to learn something new. Could you fail to be fascinated by towering view if the Mari Drama Theatre on the Lenin square or put up with golden domes and crosses of the Orthodox Church? Or take the rout to the Central Park where riding horse back you take a leisurely stroll to the Kokshaga River. If you have a scientific bent then Museum of Local Lore is a must.
