Excursion to the Ezhovo women's monastery

In the outskirts of Yoshkar-Ola as well as inside the city there are a number of different orthodox churches, chapels, monasteries and also some mosques.
Not far from Yoshkar-Ola in a small village of Ezhovo there is situated a monastery for women. During Soviet years it was completely ruined. Recently the monastery has been restaurated and partially rebuilt. Now it is a peaceful and a very beautiful place about 13 miles away from the city. The legend of the monastery runs that times ago an old peasant found an icon cut in a stone, it was shining very brightly, on that very spot later they founded a church and then a monastery. It was renewed purely by the nuns. If you take a 10 minutes walk you will come to a "healing" spring. It is believed that its water possess some curing qualities, it is always very clear and cold.
Just 3 miles away from Yoshkar-Ola there is a very church. This is an only church which, unlike the monastery, kept on working in the region during the communists were at power. People from all sides of Mary republic came here to pray. All the old icons are a very good condition, the wall painting is preserved. It's due to priests of that church, that it wasn't ruined like many other religion objects. This place is interesting for those who are interested in religion.
